Description
Introduction African American Studies has entered the 21st century as a firmly established yet still fledgling discipline. Fiscal strains and persistent institutional hostility notwithstanding, it is clear that the concept, the idea, that African-American Studies has a legitimate place in American higher education has been fundamentally established. The emergence of graduate programs further solidifies the foundation on which to further develop, update, refine and ultimately perpetuate the mission of the field. Concurrently, the emerging new age of global culture, characterized in seemingly equal parts by intimacy and conflict, brings new configurations of human reality and possibility to investigate and comprehend. The challenge for the discipline is to use the foundation and developing capabilities in ways that effectively address the exigencies that the new century brings. To that end--in addition to being concerned with paths of development involving the structure and development of new (graduate) capabilities--scholars and programs are also defining areas of discourse which current and evolving capabilities would be channel toward developing.
